Cable Guided VS High Wind Zipper Track Shades

What is the difference between the Baby Grande/Grande Cable Guided shades and the Citadel High Wind Zipper Track? Since North Solar Screen uses the same outdoor fabrics for all our shade constructions: transparent solar, clear vinyl, or blackout total privacy, how do you choose what’s right for your application?

The first thing to consider outdoors is wind load. The Baby Grande/Grande max out at 35 mph winds. These shades ride up and down on sturdy cable guides on the left and right ends. There are no sidetracks so some air/elements could get around the sides and bottom. But it is an easier install and less expensive than the Citadel High Wind Zipper Track shades. If your shades are going to be down in near or maximum wind loads on a regular basis you should upgrade to The Citadel High Wind Zipper Track to ensure longer less strain on the components and longer shade life.

This construction has two size categories: The Baby can be made up to 14’ wide and the Grande up to 20’ wide.  The construction is the same, but the roller, brackets and housing will be bigger on the Grande. We recommend using the extruded aluminum housing box to keep the shade fresher longer and for a more finished look.  It is mandatory if you motorize to ensure the motor stays dry and keeps within warranty.

The Citadel High Wind Zipper Track maxes out at 50 mph winds.  It also has two size categories: The Classic can be made up to 14’ wide. The Brawny can be made up to 20’ for solar shade fabric and 18’ for clear vinyl or blackout.  It totally encloses your area, sealing out all the outdoor elements.   Industrial Strength zippers are welded to the sides of the fabric. These zippers lock into fabric retention tracks along the sides creating a powerful bond.

The housing box at the top protects and seals the top of the shade.  The heavy weight bar at the bottom has a choice of pile brush sizes to ensure a flush fit to the floor. The shade glides up and down smoothly and can be stopped at the desired location. If you want bug proofing this is the one.  It totally seals out insects, critters, the weather and the wind.  Tracks should be hosed down on a regular basis to make sure they are clear of dirt and debris.

Both shade constructions can be crank operated or motorized.  To lower and raise the shade turn the crank with the provided hand brace, similar to an awning. Motorized shades are radio controlled and require a grounded outlet.  Solar fabrics can also use the Solar powered motor.

The Classic Citadel spans up to 14’ wide, the Brawny up to 20’. If you want bug proofing this is the one.  It totally seals out insects, critters, the weather and the wind.  It is more expensive because it has more parts and can withstand much more wind. Tracks should be hosed down on a regular basis to make sure they are clear of dirt and debris.
