SOLANA Construction

An awning should be retracted in windy conditions. Awnings must be mounted to the underside of a beam/ceiling or to the face of a beam/wall. You can roof mount if you have it installed by your roofing contractor. Installing within 3 miles of salt water is considered salty air and changes the warranty on metal parts, not the fabric or motor.

  3. Fabric Cutbacks: The shade material is cut narrower than the roller by approximately 7 1/2″–8″.
  4. Support arms include LED lights
  • Sturdy frames are available in three colors (white, sand, or bronze).
  • Order Adjustable Shoulders (only available with no cassette) if you need to adjust the pitch (angle) of the awning.
  • Metal components: are made of corrosion resistant materials (powder coated aluminum, powder coated steel, stainless steel, or galvanized steel.) If you are close to the sea “with salt air smog” where you can actually taste the salt air, spray all metal parts with fresh water as you would an ocean going boats, even a stainless-steel one.
  • All awnings are motorized and include a vibration sensor to automatically retract the awning when it’s windy.
  • Manual crank operation overrides the motor in case of power out. Operate manually within the limit stops set for the motor.
  • Hand Brace: Each awning ORDER comes with ONE free properly sized hand brace. Color to match awning frame. Available in 48″, 60″, 72″, 84″ and 96″ long. Do not leave out in the sun as constant UV exposure can crack the plastic handle.
  • You will need to supply your own Torx Screws for mounting your awning.

How To Measure Outdoor Shades

Measuring Tips:

  • Use a steel tape measure – Do not use cloth
  • Measure to the nearest 1/8” – Never round up
  • Always give width before height (projection) – Measure in inches
  • Give us raw dimensions. Do not take your own deductions

Wall Mount

The awning mounts to the flat wall surface above the area you want to shade.

Minimum Height Required: 9″ flat surface
Minimum height to mount: 100″ from floor
Brackets: 4 wallmount brackets are standard equipment
Minimum Clearance between awning front bar and any obstacle: 20″

Undermount (Ceiling Mount)

The awning mounts from the underside of a beam or soffit.
Minimum Depth Required: 9 1/2″. Must be flat, level and have no protrusions (trim or bolts) within your opening frame.
Minimum height required: 10 1/4″
Minimum height to mount: 100″ from floor
Brackets: 4 ceiling brackets (upcharge)

Roof mount

The awning mounts on top of your roof.
We recommend you have this installed by a roofing contractor. Not a DIY project.

The frame must to be mounted to a sound structure. Ideal placement is no more than 12″ away from awning shoulders on each side. This may vary based on stud placement.

FREE shipping on all shades under 90″ wide in the Continental U.S. No sales tax outside of Massachusetts. Oversize fee for shades 90″ wide and above is $80/shade. For Alaska and Hawaii the fee is $27 fee/shade of any size, plus an additional $140/ shade over 90″ wide. To prevent possible measuring errors we take orders by phone only. Motorization Options

Cleaning Outdoor Shades

Sponge with a solution of one cup mild detergent with one cup household bleach in three gallons of water. Avoid rubbing too hard. Rinse thoroughly with clear water and air dry by hanging shade in a roll down position. If you see mildew on the fabric or do not see any but know it is a problem in your area periodically scrub or sponge the fabric with a commercial mildew remover or 1 part bleach to 3 parts water and rinse thoroughly. Avoid skin and eye contact when working with bleach solutions.

The tracks or cables must be hosed down on a regular basis to make sure they are clear of dirt and debris before lifting or lowering the shade, or it will not function correctly. Not doing so will void the warranty.  If installed high up or on a second story, any equipment or labor needed for the initial installation could be needed for cleaning.  We do not cover such labor costs.

For Citadel Zipper Track shades, lubricate the zippers and PVC inserts or the extruded zipper channel (as applicable) inside the rails with a dry silicone spray regularly to ensure smooth operation. Video: How to Lubricate Citadel Tracks This is the lubricant recommended:

Outdoor Shade Warranty

North Solar Screen, LLC warranties:
  • Somfy or XQ5 Motors, remotes, sensors, controls, for 5 years. Helios Motors 3 years.
  • Cranks, housings, side rails, cables, cable hardware, fabric seams, for 10 years.
  • IF INSTALLED WITHIN 3 MILES OF SALTWATER, cranks, housings, side rails, cables, and cable hardware have a reduced warranty of ONE year. Fabric and motor warranties are unchanged.
  • Suntex 90, 95 and 97 fabrics and Insect fabrics for 10 years, Clear Vinyl with Solid Borders and Soltis Blackout for 5 years.
  • Shades must be installed correctly per instructions. We will request photos and videos of your installation.
  • To stay within warranty, shades must NOT be left down in winds greater than the product is rated for. We may check historic wind speed data in your area.
  • Good for original owner of shades only.
  • Under no circumstances are installer fees covered, regardless of whether it is a warranty issue or not.
  • Replacement parts are sent Ground. If expedited shipping is desired, you may pay the difference between Ground and expedited shipping.
  • Not following the Use & Care Guide on the Citadel High Wind Zipper Track shades will void the warranty. Contractors: Make sure your END USER signs the Use & Care Contract or the warranty will be void.
  • All shade orders are custom and as such cannot be returned or refunded. Defective or incorrect parts will be replaced.

HOLES IN FABRIC

  • Please see our slide show on the Products Page that shows how carefully and meticulously our shades are manufactured and shipped. There are no sharp instruments on site. Fabrics are cut with state-of-the-art lasers, seams are sonically welded, and our tables are rounded and smooth. All shades are thoroughly inspected before they are carefully packaged to ensure they are pristine. Therefore rips, tears, or cuts in the fabric were either caused by the shipping company, opening the boxes with knives or scissors, or happened during installation

SHIPPING DAMAGES (on receipt)

  • If shipping damage exception number is obtained from carrier, all damaged/missing parts are replaced free of charge if reported within 30 days of delivery. Photographs showing damaged packaging and parts are required.
  • If shipping damage exception number is not obtained from carrier, all damaged/missing parts are replaced free of charge if reported within 4 business days of delivery. Photographs showing damaged packaging and parts are required.

NOT AS ORDERED OR DEFECTIVE (when installing)

  • If reported within 60 days of receipt of the original order, replacement parts/shipping are free of charge. If reported 61 days or more after receipt of original order, replacement parts are free BUT YOU PAY SHIPPING.
  • Defective means fabric mis-weave, bad powder coat finish, lumpy seams, non- working motors or remotes, or non-working crank gears at installation time. We may request photos and videos.
  • Not as ordered means wrong size, color, fabric, lift system, cable anchor hardware, etc. We may request photos of what you received.
  • Our confirmations detail shade dimensions, fabric dimensions and colors, and all the specifics about the construction of the shades you are ordering. Because we are not on site, it is your responsibility to carefully read them to verify that they are correct when you OK the order.
  • There is a +/- 1/8” production tolerance. For wrong size you must send photos showing the product being measured. We may also request other photos/videos.

DAMAGED (after installation)

  • We will request photos and video and measurements to try to determine the cause of the problem (for example, failed welds, holes in fabric, cables pulling out, shades rolling crookedly, shades jamming in tracks.) Most of these problems are caused by shades being left down in more wind or colder temperatures than they rated for, issues with the installation causing the shade not to track or roll correctly, parts of the structure it is installed on interfering with the fabric and damaging it. If it is determined that the cause is weather or installation related, you will need to purchase replacement parts and pay for shipping regardless of when you report it.
  • Contact us immediately for assistance if the shade:
    • Comes out of the tracks
    • The zipper is folding over (see picture)

    Both situations must be addressed within a week or the fabric may develop a memory for the wrong position (hour glassing if allowed to hang free, or the zipper folding over) and will require purchase of a replacement panel.

  • If it is determined that a factory defect caused it, if reported before 60 days from receipt of the original order, replacement parts and shipping are free. If reported 61 days or more after receipt of the original order, replacement parts are free BUT YOU PAY SHIPPING.

MOTORS

  • If motor fails in the first 60 days, we will send you a new motor and label for sending the bad motor back no charge. If it is after 60 days, you will be charged $75 for shipping (pickup of bad motor and delivery of new one.)
  • You will be required to send photos of the electrical connections as well as the whole installation and do trouble shooting with the factory tech.
  • Evidence of water in the motor will void the motor warranty.
  • Operating motorized shades without using the cable guides or side rails voids the motor warranty.
  • Damage from dropping, improper installation resulting in the power cord being torn out, and opening up the motor end cap void the warranty

NOT COVERED

  • Installer fees—ever.
  • Expedited shipping for replacement parts.
  • Damage caused by weather (wind or temperatures that the product is not designed for).
  • Damage caused by improper installation or installing in ways that are against our recommendations.
  • Normal wear and tear, wear from fabric rubbing on walls, posts, or any part of the structure the shade is mounted on, extra bolts you wrongly installed on the shade, or any damage caused by the bottom weight bar hitting posts, walls, etc.
  • Damage to plastic hand brace handles from being left out in the sun or hanging on the shade.
  • Rusting to stainless steel or steel components or flaking of powder coat if within 3 miles of saltwater or adjacent to a chlorinated pool (warranty reduced to one year).
  • Not following the Use & Care Guide on the Citadel High Wind Zipper Track shades will void the warranty. Contractors: Make sure your END USER signs the Use & Care Contract or the warranty will be void.
  • All shade orders are custom and as such cannot be returned or refunded.

Packaging and Shipping

If your order is shipping by truck
  • Plan on having 2 able bodied people on site to unload the truck. There will only be one driver and if you use the lift gate there will be a $90 surcharge. This is a liftgate:
  • Make sure we have your daytime phone number in case there’s a problem. The will call you to make a delivery appointment.
  • Be careful how you sign for your shipment. It is imperative that you mark the bill of lading ‘damaged’  or ‘possible internal damage’ and get an ‘exception number’  if there is any sign of damage to the outer packaging,  NO MATTER HOW SMALL. You will have 30 days to report damages if you get an ‘exception number’ for damage to outer package and only 4 days if you do not get this ‘exception number.’  If you fail to do so and there are damaged or missing parts, we will not be able to replace them without charging you. Freight company policies only allow us to replace items and not refund them. You must report to us that the shipment appeared damaged within 24 hours. Include photos of the damaged boxes.
  • Do not change the delivery address for your shipment once it has actually shipped unless you are willing to pay the re consignment fee which is usually about $150
  • Let us know if you are going to be away, even if you don’t think it will be when the shade is due to be delivered. Sometimes shipments are ready earlier or later than expected. Please let us know when you are traveling so we can try to keep the delivery from arriving at the terminal in your absence.  Old Dominion charges storage fees for keeping shipments at the terminal.
  • Do not schedule an installer until you know your shipment is complete and intact. We do not cover installer visits even if they are return visits necessary because of missing or damaged parts.
  • Let us know if your address is hard to get to with a huge truck. Some truck terminals don’t have anything but large semis  (tractor trailers) to deliver. If your address is not accessible by a large semi, you may have to pick up at the terminal yourself. If you do not have a large enough vehicle to pick up and need to rent one, that is your responsibility. If delivery is attempted and the truck cannot make it, you may be charged a re delivery fee.
